Technology. The word connotes awe and promise. However, what technology has given the business world in terms of productivity has been overshadowed to a large extent by privacy and security concerns. The more accessible, mobile and "on the go" the enterprise, the more vulnerable its data becomes. The ease of transferring gigabytes of sensitive company data to portable devices without leaving a trace and the security risks of mobile computing are transforming information security priorities in corporate America in 2006. Most security incidents are kept strictly confidential by companies, yet one can still open a newspaper and read of the latest financial institution to admit the loss of hundreds of private records. What appears in the media is only the tip of the iceberg. Accessibility is now instant but so is malicious invasion. This article will attempt to illustrate modern security threats, explore the regulatory aspects of compliance, recommend the characteristics of a comprehensive solution and finally address some strategic issues inherent in the deployment process.
